Boardable Derelict Freighter
This article is about boardable derelict freighters. For the non-boardable version, see Derelict Freighter. |
Boardable Derelict Freighter is a space encounter in the No Man's Sky universe.
Appearance
Boardable derelict freighters appear as incapacitated ships, adrift in space and surrounded by a few small ship parts which have broken off. They always have the same shape of a blocky-looking freighter, but their color and decals vary widely, even within the same system. They are always found intact which distinguishes them from Non-boardable Derelict Freighters which are always found with their main hull broken into several distinct sections.
Behavior
Derelict freighters are static objects and are unresponsive to player hails or other actions.
Unlike normal Derelict Freighters which are found with a high random frequency while pulsing through a system, boardable derelict freighters are considered a rare space encounter. They can also be encountered after using an Emergency Broadcast Receiver or Anomaly Detector. Boardable derelict freighters can be landed upon and explored, which is another distinguishing trait setting them apart from normal derelict freighters.
Location
They can be found in any system but only after using an Emergency Broadcast Receiver or Anomaly Detector. Each system will have a single boardable derelict freighter, identifiable by name, which can be encountered an unlimited number of times.
While each system will only spawn a specific named boardable derelict freighter, a specific named boardable derelict freighter can be found in multiple systems. No matter which system a specific named boardable derelict freighter is found it, it appears to always have the same enemies and story elements, as well as the same technology class level for freighter components provided. A derelict freighter's descriptive class changes with each encounter.
Emergency Broadcast Receiver
Before boardable derelict freighters can be encountered, an Emergency Broadcast Receiver must be purchased from a Scrap Merchant aboard any space station. After successfully exploring a single boardable derelict freighter, a player can then receive one Emergency Broadcast Receiver per week for free on the Space Anomaly by interacting with Helios. Additional Emergency Broadcast Receivers can be purchased from a Scrap Merchant, but each successive purchase increases the price of the next. Their pricing resets back to default each day.
Entering the outer airlock of a boardable derelict freighter consumes the Emergency Broadcast Receiver that summoned it. Should a player leave before opening the outer airlock and engage their ship's pulse engine, the Emergency Broadcast Receiver will return to their inventory and can be used to summon a different derelict freighter (see Farming Derelict Freighters).
Anomaly Detector
Anomaly Detectors are occasionally found after destroying asteroids. Using one allows the player to encounter a single random Space Encounter which includes the possibility of being a boardable derelict freighter.
Enemies aboard Derelict Freighters
Boardable Derelict Freighters can have four types of enemies aboard, and each freighter can have a different combination of these types. The four types of enemies are AI Drones, AI Turrets, AI Dating Coaches, Space Jellyfish, and Crawlers.
- AI Drones are small mechanical spheres which fire laser beams at any players they encounter.
- AI Turrets sit deactivated in the ceiling and scan the room below their position. If they detect a player, they will slowly activate, indicated by them lowering into a firing position, then open fire. AI Turrets read as part of the ship when scanned. Despite being robotic, when scanned they read as a type of Abyssal Horror.
- Alien Jellyfish appear as glowing, floating jellyfish-like creatures which slowly meander around and explode when touched. When scanned, they read as a type of Abyssal Horror. They will slowly float towards any nearby player. Space jellyfish are most commonly encountered in hangars and the engineering room. Alien jellyfish come in two sizes. The normal is larger and is often found in combination with other threats. Less commonly encountered is a slightly smaller variety which moves in a faster, more erratic manner, and which is more commonly found in the absence of other threats aboard the same freighter.
- Crawlers lay dormant in large nest sacs which can burst open, releasing swarms of the little horrors which then attack the player in mass. Crawlers spit acid and are able to quickly traverse any surface, even up walls and along the ceiling, making them the greatest threat aboard derelict freighters. Occasionally these nest pods will wiggle; when doing so, they will burst open on their own if a nearby player moves, so it is best to pause when the nests are active.
These enemies are possible any combination as the presence or absence of a particular enemy type seems to be determined independently. It is rare but possible for some derelict freighters to devoid of any types of enemy. All derelict freighters within the same region of space will have the same mix of these enemies aboard.
Terminals
Multiple terminals are encountered on every boardable derelict freighter.
- Records Terminal allows the player to access the Crew Manifest.
- Secure Mainframe allows the player to access the Captain's Log. Requires a crew member's Security Credentials.
- Engineering Control allows the player one of three choices.
- Fabricate Technology Upgrade provides one Freighter Component Module.
- Fabricate Freighter Bulkhead provides a module to expand storage space on the player's freighter.
- Extract Nanites provides a modest sum of additional nanites.
- Reactivating and stepping upon a Teleport Terminal allows the player to return to the outer airlock. Once reactivated, they allow transport back and forth between the two locations. This can be useful to allow the player to return to their ship to heal. A Teleport Terminal can be located to the right of each of the other terminals.
Farming Derelict Freighters
Multiple boardable derelict freighters can be farmed for resources using only a single Emergency Broadcast Receiver. This can be done by following these steps.
- Use an Emergency Broadcast Receiver. It will turn into an Active Emergency Broadcast Receiver.
- Pulse until a boardable derelict freighter is encountered and land upon it.
- Enter the first door.
- Approach the next door. It cannot be entered without using the Docking Bay Door Control left to its left. To its right is a lootable box.
- Interact with the lootable box to receive 3 Repair Kits, Ferrite Dust, Carbon, and Sodium.
- Interact with the Docking Bay Door Control interface and select the Collect Emergency Supplies option to receive a large amount of Projectile Ammunition, 3 Life Support Gel, and 3 Ion Batteries.
- Do not select the Unseal Door option of the Docking Bay Door Control.
- Board your starship and enter pulse. Eventually the Active Emergency Broadcast Receiver will return to your inventory as a normal inactive one.
This process can be repeated without limit and is mostly useful for farming the Repair Kits. Note that should one wish to enter a derelict freighter, the Collect Emergency Supplies option can only be selected before using the Unseal Door option. Once the door has been unsealed, the emergency supplies can no longer be acquired. When exploring the interior of a derelict freighter, using a Teleport Terminal when enemies are near will cause them to despawn.

Adding new derelict freighter discoveries
New boardable derelict freighter discoveries can be added using the Derelict Freighter Form.
Systems with Reoccurring Derelict Freighters
The following systems have regularly encountered Boardable Derelict Freighter. These will be found merely by pulsing in the system for the listed amount of time. Emergency Broadcast Receivers or Anomaly Detectors do not need to be used to find them.
- 9 min. 55 sec., Sudhr-Stjarna ei'Blar (new saves)
Additional information
- The owner sequences were extracted from the 3.22 version of NMS_UPDATE3_ENGLISH.MBIN game file by pc player Ertosi.
- Each specific derelict freighter can be found in multiple systems within a single region. Each region will have multiple potential derelict freighters which can be found within that region, with each system within that region being assigned one of them. Which specific derelict freighter each system has seems to be tied to their System ID. Each specific derelict freighter provides the same class of Freighter Technology Module no matter which system they are encountered in. Each galaxy has identical derelict freighters found at their equivalent galactic coordinates.
- Derelict Freighters are currently bugged were those said to have Korvax owners always have a Vy'keen crew and vice versa. Those with Gek owners and crew are unaffected by this bug and always properly match up.
- A system's dominant race has no relation to what faction crewmembers of its derelict freighter belong to. Instead, crew faction is randomly determined for each specific derelict freighter, and that same derelict freighter will keep its same crew in all of the systems it can be found in.
- It is not uncommon for AI Drones and Alien Jellyfish to spawn trapped inside of walls.
- All derelict freighters have a Cargo listing of Classified.
- Different encounters with the same derelict freighter in the same system will always show the same stats of Owner and Class, but a specific derelict freighter's class can vary in encounters in other systems.
