Mountain
Mountain is one of the primary ecosystems in the NMS universe.
Easily located by the darker ground coloration and lack of flora species present, mountain ecosystems are present on every world. The Mountain ecosystem of each world will have two to three unique varieties of mineral not found in the other ecosystems of that world.
While no fauna species are ever listed as living in the Mountain ecosystem, it is not uncommon for Ground species to wander into nearby Mountain areas.
Despite the name of Mountain, this ecosystem can be found at any elevation on a world. While most common in higher areas and along crests and folds in the landscape, it can be present to represent harsher spots of landscape in other scattered regions as well. Mountain regions can range from large regions stretching across the landscape to tiny patches no more than a few steps wide. Caverns use the Mountain ecosystem; that makes them visually very different from caves, which use the Underground ecosystem.
Mountain Subtypes
Each world's mountain ecosystem can be one of two types: Rocks or Scrub.
Example Image | Subtype |
---|---|
Rocks | |
Scrub |
The two mountain subtypes are nearly identical with the only distinguishing feature being very sparse tufts of grass found in the Scrub subtype. The Rocks subtype is completely barren of all grass. Hazardous plants can be found in both subtypes.
These subtypes can be found on any world, no matter what its primary biome might be. This means even Dead worlds can have the Scrub Mountain subtype, giving it the appearance of occasional tufts of grass.
