Rodent is a class of fauna in the No Man's Sky universe which can be found in multiple ecosystems. They have a base rarity of Common.
Description
Rodents have two subtypes, Standard and Swimming. Both subtypes can look like a variety of creatures including beavers, moles, weasels, wombats, porcupines, bears, lizards, and even quadrupedal birds.
Standard Rodents
Most Standard Rodents are found above Ground, but the subtype also includes species living Underground.
Head Types
Rodents have eight head types which are listed in the game code as Bird, Great Dane, Lizard, Rodent, Sloth, Tapir, Taz, and Turtle. These are the only head types which Rodents can have, although the variety can seem larger due the numerous skin textures and head accessories each can have. Each head type can vary in length from species to species, with some species having a shorter or longer snout, skull, or head accessory length. Different genders of the same Rodent species will always have the same head type, although their coloration and head accessories can often differ.

Possible Rare Accessories
The mammalian head types of Rodent, Sloth, Tapir, and Taz each have a rare chance to be found without ears.
Body Types
Rodents have three body types which are listed in the game code as Lizard, Rodent, and Sloth. These are the only body types which Rodents can have, although the variety can seem larger due to the numerous skin textures and accessories each can have. Each body type has a matching set of legs, both front and back, which are always paired together with their respective body type. The Lizard and Rodent body types have flat backs while the Sloth body type has an arch-shaped back. The Lizard body type has two variants which are normal and turtle-shelled. Leg length can vary from species to species, sometimes enough to give some species a distinctive sloped back appearance. Both genders of a species will have the same body type but can have different accessories attached to their back. Species with the Lizard body type will often have one gender with the turtle shell and the other without.

Tail Types
Rodents have five tail types which are listed in the game code as Bird, Lizard, Monkey, Rodent, and Sloth. These are the only tail types which Rodents can have, although the variety can seem larger due the numerous skin textures and color patterns each can have. Each tail type can vary in length from species to species. Different genders of the same species will always have the same tail type, although those with lizard tails can either be normal or with fins attached.
Note that Lizard and Rodent tails can appear very similar. Lizard tails are always pointed while rodent tails have a rounded tip. Rodent tails are generally shorter, but due to varying tail lengths this can be a more difficult indicator to go by.

Underground Rodents
Underground Rodents are part of the Standard subtype, differing only by living Underground and having the following additional qualities.
- Size is 1.3-1.8 m (± gender variance).
- Spawn in groups of up to 3.
- They are otherwise are identical those found above ground.
Swimming Rodents
Swimming Rodents are found Underwater and behave in a manner similar to Fish. Except for their more limited size range, they are otherwise identical to Standard Rodents, sharing all of the same body parts and accessories. Swimming Rodents have a base rarity of Rare.
Head Types
Swimming Rodents have eight head types which are listed in the game code as Bird, Great Dane, Lizard, Rodent, Sloth, Tapir, Taz, and Turtle. Like Standard Rodents, these are the only head types which Swimming Rodents can have.
Unlike Standard Rodents, the mammalian head types of Rodent, Sloth, Tapir, and Taz of Swimming Rodents are commonly found without ears.
