From No Man's Sky Discoveries

Apple Mobile version

Unfortunately, no Index items appear visible in the Apple iOS version of this page, so it looks simply like a portal to an administration page. Android and PC show the Index items.--Ditchit (talk) 22:15, 25 December 2020 (UTC)

Reading more below, I think you're referring to the navigation images which were at the bottom of the main page. Yes, those looked awful (either greatly oversized or altogether absent) on several browsers. I recently redesigned the main page and moved those images to using Gallery tags instead of a custom table. Thanks to the Pivot skin, they automatically resize themselves to whatever screen size different browsers use, so there shouldn't be any more issues with this, if I understand the original issue correctly. All Mobile versions

The Category bar doesn't appear on any pages, which removes a source of useful links, not least on this Main page.--Ditchit (talk)

If you are referring to the navigation sidebar, it is accessible from the top left of all pages. The icon for it is three stacked horizontal bars. Click it and it will move the screen sideways to the different wiki categories. The same icon in the top right takes you to User Settings for the wiki. Ertosi (talk) 17:25, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Welcome

My sense, after navigating via the Home page numerous times, is that it may be missing something useful to first timers. Perhaps the notes below are worth pondering on?

  1. The index items give some interesting visual buttons to jump into the site with (although they don't all have associated images which can spoil the impression a little). But I think the Index needs to stay where it is - at the page bottom.
  2. Above it is a text Welcome which directs visitors to a page about No Man's Sky rather than the site's own content. The only two other links are to administrative pages:
  • DISCO:About starts with a focus on Cargo templates and semi-automation, which have great utility but don't introduce the site generally. Comparing NMS wikis is also interesting, but feels quite a negative way to begin. In fact, our only text-based mention of creatures, flora, etc is in a sub-section about semi-automated pages, quite a long way down under NMS Diso (sic) wiki pros which wouldn't be my first place to look for them.
  • DISCO:Community portal dives straight into registration and editing tools. The only content-link in the text is to Universe which in itself consists of just two sentences.

May I suggest that the very first few paragraphs should introduce the site's raison d'etre and content, and THEN tackle the administrative and functional items currently prominent? Below is an example which need not be used, but illustrates my thinking: --Ditchit (talk) 22:15, 25 December 2020 (UTC)

The category images at the bottom of the Main Page have been recently expanded and more thoroughly fleshed out. An additional section has been added below them featuring some of this wiki's guides and special sections. Ertosi (talk) 17:25, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Welcome to No Man's Sky Discoveries!

With its systematic approach emerging from the game's own code, No Man's Sky Discoveries focuses on exploring the No Man's Sky universe. Using semi-automated tools rooted in specialist cargo templates, it takes the work out of documenting and analysing your findings.

Identification

Use our game-code-led classification tools to identify the creatures you discover.

Archives

Use helpful templates to add your findings about the biomes, creatures, flora, and minerals you encounter in various star systems to the extensive database. Search and order them using your own criteria.

Records

Find out how unusual your creature discoveries are in comparison to others.

Spotting/Collecting

Use our game code based cladograms to build your own discovery checklists, and add to the curated collections.

Administration

To create a new page, replace the final portion of any page with your own title (e.g. replace Main_Page in the address bar above with the name of a planet you have discovered) and hit <Return>. You will be offered a number of templates and forms to choose from to help you - or you can edit the page code directly if you feel confident. For details on editing tips and registering visit the Community portal.
